What’s the Big Deal About Beef Suet?
Share
When people learn about tallow skincare, one question often follows:
Why do some brands talk about beef suet?
The answer comes down to quality.
Not all beef fat is the same, and the type of fat used to make tallow has a big impact on the final product — especially when it’s being used on skin. Traditionally, tallow rendered from beef suet has been prized for producing a cleaner, higher-quality fat.
What Is Beef Suet?
Beef suet is the firm, nutrient-dense fat found around the kidneys of the animal. Traditionally, it has been the most prized fat for rendering tallow.
Compared to other types of beef fat, suet is naturally cleaner and more stable. When rendered slowly and carefully, it produces a smooth, pure tallow that has been valued for generations.
Historically, suet was the fat most often chosen for making balms, salves, soaps, and cooking fats.
Suet vs Trim Fat
Some tallow is made from general trim fat, which comes from various parts of the animal during butchering.
While trim fat can still be rendered into tallow, it tends to produce a heavier, stronger-smelling fat that can also feel greasier on the skin.
Beef suet, on the other hand, is naturally firmer and more stable. When rendered, it produces a cleaner, smoother tallow that has long been preferred for traditional skincare.
Because of these qualities, beef suet has historically been considered the gold standard for rendering high-quality tallow.
It’s also the reason we choose to render only 100% beef suet in our own tallow skincare.
Why We Use 100% Beef Suet
At Golden Tallow, we render only 100% beef suet for our skincare products.
Using suet allows us to create tallow that feels lighter on the skin and absorbs more comfortably. It also produces a naturally cleaner scent, which is important when creating simple skincare without synthetic fragrances.
Most importantly, it keeps our process aligned with how traditional tallow balms were historically made.
A Return to Traditional Quality
In a world of highly processed ingredients, we believe there is value in returning to the methods that worked for generations.
Using beef suet isn’t a trend or a marketing detail. It’s simply the traditional way tallow was meant to be made.
And when it comes to skincare, starting with the best fat makes all the difference.
